Case study

A supermarket in the mountains of Duhok, where electricity and internet drop every day. Instead of a smaller system for a hard place, the store got everything a big store has: 4 cashier lanes, stock, accounting, label scales, fingerprint attendance and an owner app on the phone. Every part has a fallback. If the internet drops, the lanes keep selling. If the store's server stops, they switch to the cloud. When everything comes back, every sale lands exactly once. Built by one engineer, checked by 736 test files, and published as a research paper.

The problem

Up in the mountains the power cuts and the internet drops, often at the busiest hour. Most POS systems stop the moment the line goes, and a queue forms in seconds. The usual answer is a cheap, stripped-down system. The owner wanted the opposite: everything a big store has, on his phone, in Kurdish, working through every outage — with the engineer two to three hours away when something goes wrong.

Approach

  • Selling never waits for the internet: each cashier lane keeps its own copy of the store and sells on its own.
  • Three layers of fallback — cashier lane, in-store server, cloud. If one goes down the next takes over, automatically and only when it is proven safe.
  • No sale is lost or counted twice: when the connection comes back, every sale syncs exactly once, with a record nobody can quietly change.
  • Money is never refused: if something looks wrong — sold more than the stock, a price changed while offline — the sale goes through and is flagged for the owner.
  • The owner runs it all from a phone or tablet in Kurdish: prices, label scales, staff attendance and reports.
  • Nothing was cut for the mountains: full ERP, stock, accounting, scales, fingerprint attendance and a mobile back office.
  • Twenty real problems found during testing and installation became twenty fixes, each guarded by an automated test.
